〜きがする: meaning and usage

Meaning

To have a feeling that A; to think A. Used to describe a feeling or hunch about something - not used to describe factual information.

How to form it

  • verb (plain form)/い-adjective気がする
  • な-adjective (stem)な気がする
  • verb (plain form)/い-adjectiveような気がする
  • nounのような気がする

How it is used

Expresses a vague feeling or hunch ('I have a feeling that…'), not a fact. It sounds less certain and more personal than 「〜と思う」; adding 「ような」 makes it softer still.

Examples

I have a feeling I'm forgetting something today.

  2. この町には前にも来たような気がします。

I feel like I've been to this town before.
