〜ようになっているmeaning and usage

Meaning

A is a natural/automatic process done by a machine or system (including organic)

How to form it

  • verb (dictionary form)ようになっている
  • verb (nai-form)ようになっている

How it is used

Explains how a machine, system or the body is set up to work: 'is designed to', as in 「ボタンを押すと開くようになっている」. Different from 「〜ようになる」, which describes a change over time.

Examples

  1. このトイレは自動で電気がつくようになっている。

    The lights in this bathroom turn on automatically.

  2. このかばんは、雨の日でも中がぬれないようになっている。

    This bag is designed so the inside stays dry even on rainy days.

  3. 人の体は、暑いと汗をかくようになっている。

    The human body is made to sweat when it's hot.
