〜の中（なか）meaning and usage

Meaning

Out of the group A, B is the most C

How to form it

  • nounの中でnounが一番い-adjective/な-adjective (stem)
  • nounの中でquestion wordが一番い-adjective/な-adjective (stem)ですか

How it is used

'Among A, B is the most C', for comparing three or more, usually with 「一番」. In questions use 「誰」 for people, 「何」 for things, 「どこ」 for places. For two items use 「〜と〜とどちらが」.

Examples

  1. 兄は成績優秀で、学年の中で一番だ。

    My older brother's grades are excellent: he's at the top of his school year.

  2. 果物の中で、いちごが一番好きです。

    Of all fruits, I like strawberries best.

  3. 家族の中で、誰が一番早く起きますか。

    Who gets up earliest in your family?
