Meaning

It would be nice if A; I wish A; I hope A; It's good to A (advice)

How to form it

  • verb (dictionary form)/verb (nai-form)といい
  • い-adjectiveといい
  • な-adjective (stem)/nounだといい
  • plain formといいなあ/ですね

How it is used

1) A wish, 'I hope A', for things outside the speaker's control, often with 「なあ」 or 「ですね」. 2) Advice, 'it's a good idea to A'; 「〜ばいい」 leans more toward 'all you need to do is A'.

Examples

  1. 困っている人がいたら助けるといいです。

    If there's someone in trouble it's good to help them.

  2. 明日の遠足、晴れるといいね。

    I hope it's sunny for tomorrow's school trip.

  3. わからない言葉は、この辞書で調べるといいですよ。
