  • noun/な-adjective (stem)だといわれている

How it is used

Presents a widely held view or saying: 'it is said that A', without naming who says it. Common in explanations and news. Compared with hearsay 「〜そうだ」, it stresses that the view is widespread.

Examples

  1. あれは古くから神聖な山だと言われている。

    That mountain is said to have been sacred since ancient times.

  2. この橋は、町でいちばん古い橋だといわれている。

    This bridge is said to be the oldest in town.
