すなわち: meaning and usage

How it is used

A formal, mostly written word that restates what came before more precisely: 'that is, namely'. In conversation people tend to use 「つまり」.

Examples

1. 試験は来月の十日、すなわち三週間後です。

   The exam is on the 10th of next month, that is, three weeks from now.

2. 父の兄、すなわち私のおじは、京都に住んでいる。

   My father's older brother, that is, my uncle, lives in Kyoto.

3. 会員には二種類ある。すなわち、学生会員と一般会員である。

   There are two types of members: namely, student members and regular members.
