〜ものだから: meaning and usage

How to form it

• verb (plain form)/い-adjective+ものだから/もんだから
• な-adjective (stem)/noun+な+ものだから
• verb (plain form)/い-adjective+ものですから

How it is used

Gives a reason, usually as an excuse for something that went wrong or couldn't be helped; plain 「から」 has no such tone. The result is not a command, request or intention. Spoken 「もんだから」; polite 「ものですから」.

Examples

1. 旅行の予定があるものだから来週の会議に出席できない。

   I have travel plans; therefore, I can't attend next week's meeting.

2. 急いでいたものですから、かぎをかけるのを忘れてしまいました。

   I was in a hurry, so I'm afraid I forgot to lock the door.

3. あまりに眠かったもんだから、授業中に寝てしまった。

   I was so sleepy that I dozed off in class.
