How to form it

  • verb (plain form)/い-adjectiveのももっともだ
  • な-adjective (stem)/nounなのももっともだ

How it is used

Says that, given the situation, someone's reaction or choice is understandable, as in 「怒るのももっともだ」; a reason usually comes first. Not the same as sentence-initial 「もっとも、」 ('mind you'). Usually written in hiragana.

Examples

  1. 彼は遊んでばかりで試験に落ちるのももっともだ。

    He's always messing around so it's only natural for him to fail the exam.

  2. こんなにおいしいなら、行列ができるのももっともだ。

    If it's this good, it's no wonder people queue for it.

  3. 初めての一人暮らしだから、親が心配するのももっともだ。

    It's my first time living on my own, so it's understandable that my parents worry.
