How to form it

  • もっともsentence

How it is used

Starts a sentence that qualifies what was just said: 'mind you', 'though'. Usually written in hiragana. 「ただし」 states rules or conditions; 「もっとも」 adds the speaker's own remark or excuse.

Examples

  1. そういえば、しばらく優子に連絡していなかった。尤もお互い忙しいのよね。

    Come to think of it, I haven't been in contact with Yuko for quite some time. Then again, we're both busy.

  2. 来週から毎朝走ることにした。もっとも、続くかどうかは分からないけど。

    I've decided to go running every morning from next week. Whether I'll keep it up, though, I don't know.

  3. この店の料理はおいしい。もっとも、値段は少し高い。

    The food at this restaurant is good. It's a little expensive, though.
