How to form it

  • sentence。ただし、sentence

How it is used

Adds a condition, limit or exception after the main statement; common in notices, rules and instructions. Unlike 「しかし」, it does not contradict what came before, it only qualifies it.

Examples

  1. 今日から夏休みです。ただし規則正しい生活を送るように。

    Summer vacation starts today. However, make sure to keep a regular daily routine.

  2. 図書館の本は二週間借りられます。ただし、辞書は借りられません。

    Library books can be borrowed for two weeks. Dictionaries, however, cannot be checked out.

  3. 参加は無料です。ただし、申し込みが必要です。

    Taking part is free. You do, however, need to sign up.
