How it is used

Two opposite sides of the same thing or person, usually a plus and a minus: 「安い反面、壊れやすい」. Unlike 「〜一方」, which can also contrast different things, it is used for a single subject.

Examples

1. 彼女は仕事中いつも元気な顔をしている反面、宴会では静かなんだ。

   She always looks energetic at work, but at the work parties she is quiet.

2. 一人暮らしは自由な反面、寂しいこともある。

   Living alone gives you freedom, but it can also be lonely.

3. スマホは便利な反面、つい使いすぎてしまう。

   Smartphones are convenient, but on the other hand it's easy to use them too much.
