〜恐れがある: meaning and usage

How to form it

• verb (dictionary form)/verb (nai-form)+恐れがある
• noun+の+恐れがある
• verb (dictionary form)+恐れもある/恐れはない

How it is used

There is a risk that something bad will happen. Formal, typical of news, weather forecasts and warnings. Unlike the neutral 「〜かもしれない」, it is only used for bad outcomes.

Examples

1. そういう事故は再発する恐れがある。

   There is a risk that such an accident may happen again.

2. 明日は大雨の恐れがあるので、注意してください。

   There's a risk of heavy rain tomorrow, so please be careful.

3. このままでは、締め切りに間に合わない恐れがある。

   At this rate, we may not make the deadline.
