How to form it

• verb (ta-form)+上は

How it is used

Now that A (a decision, a responsibility) has happened, B must follow; B is often 「〜なければならない」 or 「〜つもりだ」. Same meaning as 「〜以上」 and 「〜からには」, but stiffer and more written.

Examples

1. 大学の試験を受けると決めた上は、受験勉強を頑張らなければなりません。

   I decided to take the university entrance exam, and so, I have to study hard for it.

2. こうなった上は、自分でなんとかするしかない。

   Now that it's come to this, I'll just have to sort it out myself.

3. チームの代表に選ばれた上は、全力で頑張るつもりだ。

   Now that I've been chosen to represent the team, I intend to give it my all.
