JLPT N3 grammar

〜だけしか: meaning and usage

Meaning

Only A can B

How to form it

  • noun/number + counterだけしかverb (nai-form)
  • verb (dictionary form)ことだけしかできない

How it is used

Combines 「だけ」 and 「しか〜ない」 to stress 'only A, nothing more'. It sounds more emphatic than 「しか〜ない」 alone and, like it, needs a negative verb.

Examples

  1. このことを知っている人は、私だけしかいない。

I'm the only one who knows about this.

  2. 今日は朝からコーヒーだけしか飲んでいない。

I've had nothing but coffee since this morning.

  3. 今は、結果を待つことだけしかできない。

All I can do now is wait for the results.
