JLPT N3 grammar

〜じゃない/ではない: meaning and usage

Meaning

A, right?; A, isn't it?

How to form it

  • verb (plain form)/い-adjective(ん)じゃない
  • noun/な-adjective (stem)(なん)じゃない

How it is used

At the end of a sentence it is not a negative: it seeks agreement ('isn't it?', 'didn't I?') or softly offers an opinion. 「〜んじゃない?」, usually with rising intonation, adds a guess. Polite: 「〜じゃないですか」.

Examples

  1. もう私たち帰ってもいいんじゃない?

It's OK if we go home already, right?

  2. この服、あなたに似合うんじゃない?

Don't you think this outfit would suit you?

See, I told you to take an umbrella, didn't I?
