How to form it

  • number + counterずつ
  • 少し/ちょっとずつ

How it is used

After a quantity it means 'A each' or 'A at a time': 「一人二つずつ」 (two per person), 「少しずつ」 (little by little). It attaches to amounts, not to ordinary nouns.

Examples

  1. 一人に1枚ずつプリントを配布します。

    I will pass out one handout to each person.

  2. 毎日少しずつ漢字を覚えています。

    I'm learning kanji a little at a time every day.

  3. りんごを一人二つずつ取ってください。

    Please take two apples each.

  4. 一人ずつ部屋に入ってください。

    Please enter the room one at a time.
