決して〜ないmeaning and usage

How to form it

  • 決してverb (nai-form)
  • 決してい-adjective (-く form)ない
  • 決してな-adjective (stem)/nounではない

How it is used

'Never, by no means', a strong negation or resolve. More formal than 「全く〜ない」 and common in promises, warnings and writing. 「決して〜ないでください」 is a firm prohibition.

Examples

  1. お味噌汁は決して沸かさないでよ、不味くなるから。

    Make sure you never let the miso soup boil, or it'll taste bad!

  2. この約束は、決して忘れません。

    I will never forget this promise.

  3. この仕事は、決して簡単ではない。

    This job is by no means easy.
