〜てご覧: meaning and usage

How to form it

• verb (te-form)+ごらん
• verb (te-form)+ごらんなさい

How it is used

A gentle form of 「〜てみなさい」, 'try A, have a go', used downward, as a parent to a child or a teacher to a pupil. Not for superiors; to them say 「〜てみてください」.

Examples

1. ほら、 この赤い花を見てごらん。

   Hey, take a look at this red flower.

2. 自分でもう一度やってごらん。

   Try doing it once more by yourself.

3. おいしいから、ちょっと食べてごらん。

   It's tasty. Have a little taste.

4. ゆっくりでいいから、声に出して読んでごらんなさい。

   It's fine to go slowly. Try reading it out loud.
