〜かどうか: meaning and usage

How to form it

• verb (plain form)/い-adjective+かどうか
• noun/な-adjective (stem)+かどうか

How it is used

Embeds a yes/no question, “whether or not”, often before 「分からない」, 「聞く」 or 「決める」. Nouns and な-adjectives take no 「だ」. If the question has a question word, drop 「どうか」 and use just 「か」: 「いつ来るか」.

Examples

1. あの子供は顔を見ても、 男かどうか全然分からない。

   Even if I look at that child's face, I don't know if the child is a boy or not.

2. あした晴れるかどうか分かりません。

   I don't know whether it will be sunny tomorrow.

3. あの店が今日開いているかどうか、電話で聞いてみます。

   I'll call and ask whether that shop is open today.
