〜に帰る: meaning and usage

• verb (masu-stem)+に+帰る
• noun+に/へ+帰る

How it is used

After a masu-stem, 「に」 gives the purpose of going back: “go home to do” (「昼ご飯を食べに帰る」). After a place, it is simply where you return to. The purpose use works like 「〜に行く」 and 「〜に来る」.

Examples

1. 冬休み中、 実家へ家族に会いに帰る大学生は多い。

   There are a lot of college students who return home during the winter holidays to see their families.

2. 忘れ物を取りに家に帰りました。

   I went back home to get something I'd forgotten.

3. 来月、国に帰ります。

   I'm going back to my home country next month.
