JLPT N5 grammar
Questions: meaning and usage
Meaning
A question can ask for a yes or no answer, what something is, where someone or something is, or who someone is. It can also ask what someone likes, dislikes, or wants, or what kind of thing they like, dislike, or want.
How to form it
- polite form (です/ます)か
- nounはquestion wordですか
- question wordが好きですか
How it is used
Add 「か」 to a polite sentence; the word order stays the same, and a question word sits where the answer would go. A question word as subject takes 「が」, not 「は」: 「だれが来ますか」. Friends often drop 「か」 and just raise the pitch.
Examples
これは高いペンですか。
Is this an expensive pen?
駅はどこですか。
Where is the station?
どんな食べ物が好きですか。
What kind of food do you like?
About the example The sentence-final 「ですか」 makes this a polite yes or no question asking whether this is an expensive pen.
