JLPT N5 grammar

〜好き・嫌い・欲しい: meaning and usage

Meaning

好き means to like, 嫌い to dislike, and 欲しい to want something. が commonly marks the thing liked, disliked, or wanted.

How to form it

  • nounが好き/嫌いです
  • nounが欲しいです
  • verb (dictionary form)のが好き/嫌いです

How it is used

「好き」 and 「嫌い」 are な-adjectives (「好きな人」); 「欲しい」 is an い-adjective. All three mark their object with 「が」. To like doing something, say 「〜のが好き」. 「嫌い」 sounds strong, so people often say 「あまり好きじゃない」.

Examples

  1. 動物が大好きです。

    I love animals.

  2. 私は料理をするのが好きです。

    I like cooking.

  3. 弟は野菜が嫌いです。

    My younger brother hates vegetables.

About the example In が大好きです, が marks animals as the thing liked. 大好き is an emphatic form of 好き, expressing strong liking.
