Matches: winning, losing and places

This lesson covers 12 kanji for matches, winning and losing. Sports news uses 「優勝ゆうしょう」, 「勝負しょうぶ」, 「逆転ぎゃくてん」 and 「一位いちい」 every day, and they turn up in daily life too: a job that goes wrong is a 「失敗しっぱい」, a quick meeting beforehand is an 「打うち合あわせ」, and keeping a promise is 「約束やくそくを 守まもる」. Watch a few readings closely: 「失敗しっぱい」, 「勝負しょうぶ」, 「勝手かって」, and 「競きょう」, which is read 「けい」 in 「競馬けいば」.

Tip

When in doubt, ask yourself: is it about speed or about time? 「速はやく 走はしる」 is to run fast; 「早はやく 起おきる」 is to get up early. To tell someone to hurry, you usually write 「早はやく」: 「早はやく 来きて」.

Tip

「抜ぬく」 has many meanings: to pull out (「歯はを 抜ぬく」), to leave something out (「わさび抜ぬき」 at a sushi bar), to skip (「朝あさご飯はんを 抜ぬく」) and to pass (「前まえの 車くるまを 抜ぬく」). 「追おい抜ぬく」 is to catch up from behind and go past.

Readings to learn carefully

Words in this lesson whose readings change
WordHow it changes

Compare

English “fast” and “early” are both 「はやい」 in Japanese, and only the kanji tell them apart: 「速はやい」 is “fast”, 「早はやい」 is “early”. After “win” and “lose”, the match or opponent takes 「に」: “win the game” is 「試合しあいに 勝かつ」, and “lose to someone” is 「〜に 負まける」. To remember the kanji, look at their parts: 「追おう」, 「逆ぎゃく」 and 「速はやい」 all have 辶, which is about moving; 「勝かつ」 has 力 (“power”) at the bottom.
