「〜にあって」: in the midst of …
「にあって」 follows a noun and means “in the midst of …”: in a situation, an era or a position. The noun before it is usually out of the ordinary: 「非常時」, 「不況」, 「異国の地」, 「人の上に立つ立場」; or 「このような状況」 or 「〜という時代」 spells out the situation. The second half says what one should do in that situation, or what actually happens. The tone is formal. It is common in the news, essays and speeches, and almost never used in everyday conversation.
| Form | How it attaches | Meaning | Style |
|---|---|---|---|
| 「〜にあって」 | noun + 「にあって」 | in the midst of … (what follows may fit or contrast) | written, speeches |
| 「〜にあっては」 | noun + 「にあっては」 | in such a situation (one usually does, or should, …) | written |
| 「〜にあっても」 | noun + 「にあっても」 | even in the midst of … | written |
| 「〜中にあって」 | verb plain form or noun + 「の」 + 「中にあって」 | amid a situation where … | written, news |
What follows 「にあって」 can be what you would expect or a contrast: “precisely because we are in such times, we must …”, or “although we are in such times, …”. To say “even …” clearly, use 「にあっても」.
非常時にあっては、何よりも冷静な判断が求められる。
In an emergency, calm judgement is needed above all else.
情報があふれる現代にあって、自ら考える力はますます重要になっている。
In an age awash with information, the ability to think for yourself is becoming ever more important.

What follows fits the situation: precisely because of the position, such things must not be said.
景気が低迷する中にあって、この町の商店街はにぎわいを保っている。
Amid the economic slump, the town’s shopping street is still bustling.
A contrast: the economy is sluggish, yet the shopping street is still lively.
Watch out
Common mistakes「にあって」 is not used for ordinary places and dates. “I waited for a friend at the station” is 「駅で友達を待った」, not 「駅にあって」; “a meeting on Monday” uses 「月曜日に」. Also, 「東京にあって、〜」 and 「駅の近くにあって、〜」 are usually just the te form of 「ある」: “it is in Tokyo, and …”. That is not this lesson’s pattern; tell them apart from the context.
Compare
「において」 and 「にあって」「において」 (N3 lesson 29, recognise only) simply marks a place, time or field, in a neutral tone: 「会議において決定した」. 「にあって」 stresses being “in the midst of” something, and usually follows a special situation or position. “Decided at the meeting” is never 「会議にあって」.
「〜をもって」: by means of … (formal means and grounds)
「をもって」 follows a noun and gives the means, method or grounds for doing something: a formal 「で」. The noun is usually abstract: 「書面」, 「誠意」, 「拍手」, 「身」, 「実力」. It is common in notices, speeches, the news and essays; with customers, the even more formal 「をもちまして」 is used.
| Form | Example | Meaning | Style |
|---|---|---|---|
| noun + 「をもって」 | 書面をもって | by means of … (means, method) | written, formal notices |
| noun + 「をもちまして」 | 書面をもちまして | same as above, more formal | to customers, speeches |
| noun + 「をもってすれば」 | 彼の実力をもってすれば | with … (one can) | written |
| noun + 「をもってしても」 | 最新の技術をもってしても | even with … (one still can’t) | written |
| set phrase 「身をもって」 | 身をもって知る | (learn) first-hand | spoken and written |

現代の医学をもってしても、この病気の原因はまだ解明されていない。
Even with modern medicine, the cause of this disease has not yet been found.
Watch out
Common mistakesDon’t use 「をもって」 for physical tools or means of transport: “eat with chopsticks” and “go by train” are 「箸で食べる」 and 「電車で行く」. Using 「をもって」 for small everyday matters sounds like reading out an official document. Also, 「をもってすれば」 is followed by “can”, and 「をもってしても」 by “still can’t”; don’t get them the wrong way round.
Tip
The grammatical 「をもって」 is usually written in kana. Written as 「を持って」, it means “holding”: 「傘を持って出かける」. Older texts also write 「を以て」; you only need to understand it. The use meaning “as of …”, as in 「本日をもって閉店いたします」, comes in lesson 2.
「〜にして」: not until …; only …; both … and …
「にして」 follows a noun. It is a written version of 「で」 that adds the speaker’s strong feeling. It has four common uses: after an age or a number of times, “only at this point (at last)” or “already, at such a young age”; after a person, with 「初めて」, “only someone like this can do it”; between two nouns or adjectives, “both … and …”; and set phrases such as 「一瞬にして」 and 「一夜にして」.
| Use | How it attaches | Example | Style |
|---|---|---|---|
| not until …; already at … | age, number of times or point in time + 「にして」 (+ 「初めて」 or 「ようやく」) | 三度目にしてようやく | written, news reports |
| only … can | person + 「にして初めて」 | 名人にして初めて | written |
| both … and … | noun or na-adjective stem + 「にして」 + noun or adjective | 医師にして作家/簡潔にして明快 | written |
| in an instant | 「一瞬にして」 「一夜にして」 | 一夜にして有名になる | written, news reports; also spoken |

The department manager’s explanation was concise and clear.
Compare
「で」 and 「にして」「六十歳で退職した」 only states a fact. 「六十歳にして初めて」 carries feeling: the speaker thinks it came late. With 「わずか十六歳にして」, the speaker feels it came early. For ordinary facts, 「で」 is enough: “graduated from university at twenty-two” is 「二十二歳で大学を卒業した」.
Watch out
Don’t mix these up「にしては」 (N3 lesson 13) means “for … (surprisingly)”: 「初心者にしては上手だ」. 「にしても」 (N2 lesson 8) means “even if …”. The 「にして」 in 「コーヒーにしてください」 is the te form of 「にする」, for choosing something. This lesson’s 「にして」 usually comes after an age, a number of times or a person, and is often followed by 「初めて」 or 「ようやく」.
Tip
The saying 「この親にしてこの子あり」 means “like parent, like child”, and can be said in praise or in criticism. You only need to understand it.

Compare
“In the midst of” and “amid” are close to 「にあって」; “by means of” and “with” are close to 「をもって」; “not until (an age)” and “only (someone) can” are close to 「にして初めて」. Don’t translate every “at the age of” as 「にして」: for plain facts, say 「〜歳で」.
Dialogue and short text: an old shop’s owner, a small factory in the news

今日は、創業百年を迎えた和菓子店の店主、中村さんにお話を伺います。
Today we’re speaking with Nakamura, the owner of a traditional Japanese sweet shop that has reached its hundredth year.

Thank you for having me.

At a time when more and more people are cutting down on sweet things, I hear your shop is popular with young customers too.

ありがたいことです。実はわたし、四十歳にしてようやく、店を継ぐ決心がついたんです。それまでは会社員でした。
We’re very grateful. Actually, it wasn’t until I was forty that I finally made up my mind to take over the shop. Until then I was an office worker.
- 記者
会社を辞めて、ご苦労はありませんでしたか。
Didn’t you have a hard time after leaving your company?
- 中村
ありましたよ。父の腕をもってしても、店を続けるのは楽じゃない。それを身をもって知りました。
Oh, I did. Even with my father’s skill, keeping the shop going isn’t easy. I learnt that first-hand.
- 記者
それでも続けてこられたのは、なぜでしょう。
So why do you think you’ve been able to keep going?
- 中村

From next month we plan to sell sweets made with seasonal fruit. Please do come and try them.
An interview is a formal setting, so the reporter introduces the situation with 「〜中にあって」. Telling his own story, the owner uses 「四十歳にしてようやく」 to show it came late, and also 「をもってしても」, 「身をもって」 and 「誠意をもって」. Chatting with a friend about the same things, 「四十になってやっと」 and 「身にしみてわかった」 would be enough.

Amid a harsh climate of rising parts prices and continuing labour shortages, a small local factory with around twenty employees is drawing attention. Tiny screws made by the company have been chosen for a small research satellite.
社長は「創業五十年にして、ようやく夢がかなった」と語る。最新の機械をもってしても出しにくい精度を、熟練した職人が手作業で実現したという。採用の決定は、先月、書面をもって正式に伝えられた。

“Fifty years after we started, our dream has finally come true,” says the company president. Skilled craftsmen are said to have achieved by hand a precision that is hard to reach even with the latest machines. The decision to use the screws was formally communicated in writing last month.
The report’s first sentence sets the scene with 「〜環境にあって」. Then 「五十年にして、ようやく」 shows how hard-won the success was, 「をもってしても」 shows what machines can’t do and the craftsmen did, and 「書面をもって」 marks the formal notice. When you read the news, find these expressions first and you will see which parts are background and which are the main point.
