机の上を片づける
机の上には、ノート、マグカップ、充電器、紙の束、それに筆記用具のケースがあります。今日は全部片づけようと思いましたが、どこから手をつけるか分からなくて、椅子に座ったまましばらく考え込んでいました。

On the desk there’s a notebook, a mug, a charger, a stack of paper and a pencil case. Today I meant to tidy the lot, but I didn’t know where to start, so I sat in my chair, lost in thought, for quite a while.
そこで、筆記用具だけを集めることにしました。筆記用具なら、考えなくても手が動くからです。ボールペンが三本、鉛筆が二本、蛍光ペンが一本出てきました。インクの出ないボールペンは、ひとまず別の箱に入れました。ほかの物はそのままにしました。

So I decided to gather up just the pens and pencils. With those, my hands could get on with it without my having to think. Out came three ballpoints, two pencils and a highlighter. The ballpoints that had run out of ink went into a separate box for now. Everything else I left where it was.
筆記用具を一つの筒に立てると、机の左側が少し広く見えました。マグカップも紙の束も、まだそこにあります。でも、今日はそれで十分だと思いました。明日は充電器のコードをまとめるつもりです。

Once the pens and pencils were standing together in one pot, the left side of the desk looked a little roomier. The mug and the stack of paper are still there. But I decided that was enough for today. Tomorrow I’m going to tidy up the charger cable.
Three expressions
この仕事に手をつけるのは、午後にしよう。
I’ll make a start on this job in the afternoon.
「手をつける」: to start on something, to get going with it. Often 「〜に手をつける」; in the story, 「どこから手をつけるか」 means “where to start”.
週末に部屋を掃除することにしました。
I decided to clean my room at the weekend.
「〜ことにした」: after the dictionary form of a verb, a decision the speaker made themselves. For something others decided, use 「〜ことになった」.
今日は水だけ飲んで、早く寝ました。
Today I had only water and went to bed early.
「〜だけ」: after a noun, limits it to just that. 「しか」 also means “only”, but it must be followed by a negative: 「水しか飲みませんでした」.
One small thing to do
Tip
Gather the pens on your own desk into one pot or box. You don’t need to buy or throw away anything; if you have no pens to hand, skip it.
