窓辺に机を動かした日
森下さんの部屋は南向きです。でも机は、ずっと部屋の奥の壁の前に置いてあったので、昼間でも電気スタンドをつけて勉強していました。せっかく日当たりのいい部屋なのに、もったいない。ある土曜日、森下さんは机を窓辺まで動かしてみました。

Morishita’s room faces south. But her desk had always stood against the wall at the back of the room, so even in the daytime she studied with the desk lamp on. Such a sunny room, and all that light going to waste. One Saturday, Morishita tried moving the desk over to the window.
その日は、光がどう動くか記録することにしました。一時間ごとに、机の上の光のはしに付箋を貼って、時間を書きます。朝九時には光が強すぎて、パソコンの画面がよく見えませんでした。そこでレースのカーテンを半分だけ閉めると、ちょうどいい明るさになりました。

That day, she decided to record how the light moved. Every hour, she stuck a sticky note at the edge of the light on the desk and wrote the time on it. At nine in the morning the light was so strong she could hardly see her computer screen. So she drew the net curtain halfway across, and the brightness was just right.
時間がたつにつれて、光は机の上をゆっくり横へ動いていきました。ペン立ての影も、少しずつ向きを変えていきます。付箋を貼っているうちに、読むつもりだった本のことはすっかり忘れていました。そして三時少し前、光は急に消えました。太陽が隣のマンションの向こうに隠れたのです。机の上には、九時から二時まで、六枚の付箋が並んでいました。

As time went by, the light crept slowly sideways across the desk. The shadow of the pen pot turned little by little too. Somewhere in all that note-sticking, she completely forgot about the book she had meant to read. Then, just before three, the light suddenly vanished. The sun had gone behind the block of flats next door. On the desk lay a row of six sticky notes, from nine to two.
森下さんは付箋を見ながら、二つのことを決めました。朝はカーテンを半分閉める。三時を過ぎたら、電気スタンドをつけるようにする。それから六枚の付箋をはがして、新しい一枚に「三時 スタンド」と書き、机のすみに貼りました。

Looking at the notes, Morishita decided two things. In the morning, draw the curtain halfway. After three o’clock, remember to switch on the desk lamp. Then she peeled off the six notes, wrote “3 o’clock: lamp” on a new one and stuck it on the corner of the desk.
Three expressions
秋が深くなるにつれて、朝が寒くなってきました。
As autumn deepens, the mornings have been getting colder.
「〜につれて」: after the dictionary form of a verb, “as A changes, B changes with it”; both halves are gradual changes. In the story, 「時間がたつにつれて」 means “as time went by”.
音楽を聞いているうちに、眠ってしまいました。
While I was listening to music, I fell asleep.
「〜うちに」: after 「〜ている」, something happens, without your noticing, while you are doing something. In the story, 「付箋を貼っているうちに」 means “somewhere in all that note-sticking (she forgot)”. After an adjective, as in 「若いうちに」, it means “while you still are …”: “while you’re young”.
毎晩十二時までに寝るようにしています。
I try to go to bed by twelve every night.
「〜ようにする」: after the dictionary form or nai form of a verb, making a conscious effort to do something, building a habit. In the story, 「電気スタンドをつけるようにする」 means “remember to switch on the lamp”. 「〜ようになる」 is a change that happens by itself; 「〜ようにする」 is something you set out to do.
One small thing to do
Tip
Notice what time the sun reaches your desk today, and what time it leaves. Just jot down both times on a small note and stick it by the desk.
