机のすみの小さな紙
林さんが先月から住んでいるのは、家具付きの古いアパートです。ベッドと棚と、木の机が一つ。引っ越した日、机をふいていると、右のすみに小さな紙が貼ってあるのに気がつきました。色の薄くなった字で、「使ったら戻す」とだけ書いてあります。前に住んでいた人が書いたのでしょう。

Since last month, Hayashi has been living in an old furnished flat. A bed, a set of shelves and a wooden desk. On moving day, as she was wiping the desk, she noticed a small piece of paper stuck in the right-hand corner. In faded letters, it said only: “Put it back when you’ve used it.” The person who lived here before must have written it.
林さんは、はがそうとしましたが、紙はしっかり貼りついていて、字もていねいでした。少し考えて、そのままにしておくことにしました。知らない人の言葉なのに、なぜか自分に言われているような気がしたからです。

Hayashi tried to peel it off, but it was stuck fast, and the writing was neat and careful. After a moment’s thought, she decided to leave it where it was. They were a stranger’s words, yet somehow it felt as if they were meant for her.
その日から、紙に書いてあるとおりにしてみることにしました。はさみを使ったら、引き出しの左へ。テープを使ったら、右へ。最初は面倒でしたが、二週間ほどたつと、物を探す時間がほとんどなくなっていました。

From that day on, she decided to try doing just as the note said. Used the scissors? Back to the left of the drawer. Used the tape? Back to the right. It was a bother at first, but after about two weeks she was spending almost no time looking for things.
ある夜、はさみが見つかりませんでした。引き出しを全部開けてから、昼に台所で、届いた箱をはさみで開けたことを思い出しました。はさみは台所のテーブルの上にありました。林さんはそれを引き出しの左に戻して、机のすみの紙をもう一度見ました。この部屋を出る日が来ても、これははがさないでおこう、と思いました。

One night, she couldn’t find the scissors. Only after opening every drawer did she remember that earlier in the day she had used them in the kitchen to open a box that had arrived. The scissors were on the kitchen table. Hayashi put them back on the left of the drawer and looked again at the note on the corner of the desk. Even when the day comes to leave this room, she thought, I’ll leave this where it is.
Three expressions
駅に着いたら、電話してください。
Please call me when you get to the station.
「〜たら」: after the ta form of a verb (「使った」→「使ったら」), “once A is done, B”; it can also state a condition. In the story, 「使ったら戻す」 means “put it back once you’ve used it”.
説明書に書いてあるとおりに、ボタンを押しました。
I pressed the button just as the manual said.
「〜とおりに」: after the dictionary form or ta form of a verb, or 「名詞+の」, “just as …, the way …”. In the story, 「紙に書いてあるとおりに」 means “just as the note said”.
だれかに呼ばれたような気がして、後ろを見ました。
I felt as if someone had called me, so I looked behind me.
「〜ような気がする」: after the plain form, “I have a feeling that …”, a sense with no firm grounds. In the story, 「自分に言われているような気がした」 means “it felt as if the words were meant for her”.
One small thing to do
Tip
Stick a small note on a corner of your desk saying “Put it back when you’ve used it”, or copy out 「使ったら戻す」. Any paper and pen you have to hand will do.
