商店街しょうてんがいの朝あさ

商店街しょうてんがいの朝あさは、シャッターが一ひとつずつ開あく音おとから始はじまります。わたしは駅えきへ行いく途中とちゅう、毎朝まいあさこの商店街しょうてんがいを通とおります。まだ人ひとが少すくない時間じかんに、八百屋やおやのおじさんが静しずかに野菜やさいを並ならべています。

Morning on the shopping street begins with the sound of shutters going up, one after another. I walk through this street every morning on my way to the station. While there are still few people about, the man at the greengrocer’s is quietly setting out his vegetables.

しばらくすると、パン屋やから甘あまいにおいがしてきて、近ちかくの人ひとが店みせの前まえに並ならびます。「おはようございます」とあいさつする声こえも聞きこえます。店みせの前まえが少すこしずつにぎやかになって、通とおりが目めを覚さましていくように見みえます。

After a while, a sweet smell drifts out of the bakery, and people from nearby start queuing outside. I can hear them saying “Good morning” to each other. Bit by bit the shopfronts grow livelier, and the whole street seems to be waking up.

Nothing special happens, but I like walking along and watching the street change a little every morning. Recently I noticed something: if I look at the shopping street, I know the time without checking my watch. If the bakery’s shutter is still down, I’m earlier than usual. If people are already queuing outside the bakery, I’m a little late. This morning there were already three people in the queue, so I walked a bit faster to the station.

Three expressions

  1. 毎日まいにち、漢字かんじを三みっつずつ覚おぼえています。

Every day I learn three kanji.

「〜ずつ」: the same amount each time, little by little. It follows a number or 「少すこし」. In the story, 「シャッターが一ひとつずつ開あく」 means “the shutters go up one by one”, and 「少すこしずつにぎやかになって」 means “growing livelier bit by bit”.

  2. 雨あめがやんで、しばらくすると空そらが明あかるくなりました。

The rain stopped, and after a while the sky grew brighter.

「しばらくすると」: “after a while”. A short time passes, and what follows is something new that happens. In the story, 「しばらくすると、パン屋やから甘あまいにおいがしてきて」 means “after a while, a sweet smell drifts out of the bakery”.

  3. あの雲くもは、魚さかなのように見みえます。

That cloud looks like a fish.

「〜ように見みえる」: “looks like …”. It follows a noun + 「の」 or a verb in the plain form, and gives your own impression of what you see. In the story, 「通とおりが目めを覚さましていくように見みえます」 means “the whole street seems to be waking up”.

One small thing to do

Tip

Next time you pass a shop near you, look at the opening hours on the door and remember what time one of them opens. No need to take a photo or make a special trip.
