JLPT N1 grammar

〜ときている: meaning and usage

Meaning

And on top of that, A; A is the case (emphasizing a fact)

How to form it

  • verb (plain form)/い-adjectiveときている/ときた
  • noun/な-adjective (stem)ときている/ときた

How it is used

Spoken: singles out a striking fact about someone or something, often as the reason for the speaker's verdict (「若くて才能があるときている」). It can praise or complain; 「〜ときた」 also occurs. 「と来たら」 instead raises a topic to complain about.

Examples

  1. 彼はハンサムで頭脳明晰と来ている。

He's handsome, and on top of that, brilliant.

  2. この店は安くておいしいときている。込むのも当然だ。

This place is cheap and the food is good, so of course it's crowded.

  3. あの店は高いうえに、量も少ないときている。客が減るわけだ。

That place is expensive and, on top of that, the portions are small; no wonder it's losing customers.
