〜にあたって／にあたりmeaning and usage

At the time of A (which starts now)..; On the occasion of A

How to form it

  • nounにあたって/にあたり
  • verb (dictionary form)にあたって/にあたり

How it is used

On the occasion of starting something important or reaching a special moment: 'upon', 'when about to'. B is often preparation, resolve or a formal greeting. It suits speeches and notices; 「にあたり」 is more formal. 「〜に際して」 is similar.

Examples

  1. 運転するにあたり運転免許は必要です。

    When driving, a driver's license is necessary.

  2. 留学するにあたって、両親とよく話し合った。

    Before going to study abroad, I talked it over properly with my parents.

  3. 開会にあたり、一言ごあいさつ申し上げます。

    As we open the meeting, allow me to say a few words.
