How to form it

How it is used

A formal 'on the occasion of' or 'when doing A', for special one-off events such as starting school, departing or signing a contract; common in notices and speeches. More formal than 「〜際（に）」; 「〜にあたって」 adds a sense of facing the task ahead.

Examples

  1. 入場に際し靴をお脱ぎください。

    Upon entering, please take off your shoes.

  2. 留学に際して、両親からたくさんのアドバイスをもらった。

    When I went to study abroad, my parents gave me lots of advice.
