How it is used

Formal: what follows is the logical result of what came before: 'therefore, consequently'. It is typical of explanations, papers and notices; in everyday talk people tend to use 「だから」 or 「それで」.

Examples

  1. 今夜は花火大会です。したがって道路は渋滞となるでしょう。

    Tonight's the fireworks display. So because of that, the roads will probably be congested.

  2. 本日は祝日です。したがって、図書館は休みとなります。

    Today is a public holiday; therefore, the library is closed.

  3. この試験は難しい。したがって、毎日の準備が大切だ。

    This exam is difficult. Therefore, daily preparation is important.
