How it is used

A conjunction: the previous sentence is the cause and the next the result, 'for that reason, therefore'. Objective and somewhat formal, typical of writing and announcements; in conversation 「だから」 is usual.

Examples

  1. 昨日は雪が多く降りました。その為交通機関に遅れが出ています。

    It snowed a lot yesterday. Hence, there are delays with the transportation.

  2. 台風が近づいています。そのため、明日の授業は休みです。

    A typhoon is approaching. For that reason, there are no classes tomorrow.

  3. 駅前の道は工事中だ。そのため、少し遠回りしなければならない。

    The road in front of the station is under construction, so we have to take a slight detour.
