JLPT N2 grammar

〜としても: meaning and usage

Meaning

  1. Even if A were the case
  2. Even if I were to A (A is not possible or useless/not worth doing)

How to form it

  • plain formとしても
  • たとえ/仮にplain formとしても

How it is used

Supposes A for argument's sake and says B holds anyway: 'even if'. It also says that doing A would be useless or impossible. It often pairs with 「たとえ」 or 「仮に」 and stresses the supposition more than 「〜ても」.
