JLPT N3 grammar

たとえ〜ても: meaning and usage

Meaning

Even if A is the case

This point is also listed at N2.

How to form it

  • たとえverb (te-form)も
  • たとえい-adjective (-く form)ても
  • たとえな-adjective (stem)/nounでも

How it is used

Sets up a hypothetical, often extreme, case: 'even if A'. The result or resolve does not change, and the second half is often the speaker's will or judgment. Unlike 「いくら〜ても」, the focus is the supposition, not degree.
