〜上げる／〜上がるmeaning and usage

Meaning

  1. ～上げる: finish doing A (transitive).
  2. ～上がる: A finishes or is completed (intransitive).

How to form it

  • verb (masu-stem)上げる
  • verb (masu-stem)上がる

How it is used

After a verb stem it means 'finish, complete': 「〜上げる」 is transitive, someone finishes the job (「書き上げる」); 「〜上がる」 is intransitive, the thing gets done (「焼き上がる」). It can also mean 'up', as in 「持ち上げる」.

Examples

  1. １０時にパンが焼き上がります。

    The bread will be done baking at 10 o'clock.

  2. 一晩でレポートを書き上げた。

    I finished writing the report in one night.

  3. みんなで作った作品が、やっと出来上がった。

    The piece we all made together is finally finished.
