Meaning

No matter how (much) A, B

How to form it

  • どんなにverb (te-form)も
  • どんなにい-adjective (-く form)ても
  • どんなにな-adjective (stem)/nounでも

How it is used

With 「〜ても」: 'no matter how A, B', where B does not change. Close to 「いくら〜ても」, though 「どんなに」 focuses on degree. It also appears in exclamations: 「どんなに〜だろう」 'how A it must be'.

Examples

  1. どんなに頑張っても英語が上手になりません。

    No matter how hard I try I'm not getting good at English.

  2. どんなに忙しくても、朝ご飯は食べるようにしている。

    No matter how busy I am, I make a point of eating breakfast.

  3. どんなに小さなことでも、気になったら聞いてください。

    However small it is, please ask if something is on your mind.
