〜て置くmeaning and usage

Meaning

  1. To do A in advance; do A as preparation for something else
  2. To leave as is in the state A

How to form it

  • verb (te-form)おく
  • 〜ておく → 〜とく/〜でおく → 〜どく

How it is used

Doing something in advance to be ready (「予約しておく」), or leaving something as it is (「窓を開けておく」). In speech it becomes 「〜とく」. To describe a resulting state, use 「〜てある」.

Examples

  1. あなたの名前と住所を書き留めておきましょう。

    I will write down your name and address.

  2. 旅行の前に、ホテルを予約しておきました。

    I booked the hotel ahead of the trip.

  3. 暑いので、窓を開けておいてください。

    It's hot, so please leave the window open.
