〜続ける: meaning and usage

How to form it

• verb (masu-stem)+続ける

How it is used

After a masu-stem: keep on doing something (「歩き続ける」); it also works for natural events (「雨が降り続ける」). Compared with 「〜ている」, it stresses that it goes on without stopping.

Examples

1. そのように勉強し続けたらすぐに上手になるでしょう？

   If you continue to study like that, soon you'll get really good, right?

2. 雨が三日間降り続けている。

   It has been raining for three days straight.

3. 子どものころから、ピアノを習い続けています。

   I've kept taking piano lessons since I was a child.
