How to form it

  • verb (dictionary form)ようにする
  • verb (nai-form)ようにする

How it is used

Making an effort, often as a habit, so that something does or doesn't happen; 「〜ようにしている」 is common. 「〜ようにしてください」 is a soft request. For a one-time decision, use 「〜ことにする」.

Examples

  1. ねぇ、なるべく早く帰るようにするから、ご飯食べないで待っててよ。

    Hey, I'll try to get home as soon as possible, so please wait for me before you eat.

  2. 毎日、野菜を食べるようにしています。

    I make a point of eating vegetables every day.

  3. 授業に遅れないようにしてください。

    Please make sure you're not late for class.
