Seven kanji for the week
Japanese names the days of the week with seven kanji: sun and moon, then fire, water, tree, gold and earth. Each day is “the kanji + 「曜日」”. In all seven, the kanji before 「曜日」 takes its on’yomi.
| Day | Japanese | on’yomi of the kanji |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday |
| Monday |
| Tuesday |
| Wednesday |
| Thursday |
| Friday |
| Saturday |
Tip
In speech the 「日」 is often dropped: 「月曜」, 「金曜」. Calendars and timetables often show just one kanji, such as 「(月)」 or 「(土)」.
