Parts of the body

This lesson covers kanji for the body and health. First, three points: 「首くび」 is the neck, not the head; 「身しん」 is read しん in 「出身しゅっしん」 and 「身長しんちょう」; and 「治なおる」 and 「治なおす」 are an intransitive and transitive pair.

More radicals, following on from lesson 1: kanji with 月, like 「腹はら」 and 「背せ」, are often about the body (this 月 was originally 肉, “flesh”); kanji with 疒, like 「病気びょうき」, 「痛いたい」 and 「疲つかれる」, are often about illness.

Watch out

「直なおる」 and 「直なおす」 (lesson 16) are also read なおる and なおす: use 治 for illness and injury, and 直 for broken things and mistakes, as in 「パソコンを 直なおす」 and 「間違まちがいを 直なおす」.

Compare

English “hot” is two kanji in Japanese: 「熱あつい」 for something hot to the touch, 「暑あつい」 for hot weather. Radicals help with the shapes: 「痛いたい」 and 「疲つかれる」 both sit inside 疒 (the sickness radical); 「腹はら」 and 「背せ」 both have 月, linked to the body.

Culture

In Japan, body temperature is often given in 「度ど」 and 「分ぶ」: 37.5 degrees is 「三十七度さんじゅうななど五分ごぶ」. When you visit someone who is ill, or someone tells you they feel unwell, you often say 「お大事だいじに」.
