「〜にわたって」: over the whole span of …
「にわたって」 follows a noun for a period, a number of times or an area, and means it covers the whole stretch, from start to finish: a meeting that went on for a full three hours, building work that lasted two years, two kilometres of road under water. It carries a sense of “long and large”, and what follows is usually something that goes on. It is common in the news, reports and formal explanations; in conversation people usually say 「〜ずっと」 or 「〜の間ずっと」.
| How to attach it | Example | Style |
|---|---|---|
| period + 「にわたって」 | 三日間にわたって | written, news, formal explanations |
| number of times + 「にわたって」 | 数回にわたって | same as above |
| area + 「にわたって」 | 広い範囲にわたって | same as above |
| written linking form: 「にわたり」 | 十年にわたり、 | official documents, news |
| before a noun: 「にわたる」 + noun | 半年にわたる工事 | written; also 「にわたった」 |

Watch out
Common mistakesBefore 「にわたって」 comes a stretch of time or an area, not a point in time: don’t say 「三時にわたって」. A very short time sounds odd too: say 「会議は十分ほどで終わった」, not 「会議は十分にわたって続いた」.
「〜を通じて」 and 「〜を通して」: all through; by way of
Both expressions have two meanings. First, after a noun for a period, they mean it is like this all through that time: 「一年を通じて暖かい」 (warm all year round). What follows is usually a state or tendency that holds. Second, they mean by way of a person, a channel or an experience: meeting someone through a friend, learning something through volunteer work.
| Meaning | How to attach it | Example | Style |
|---|---|---|---|
| all through a period | period noun + 「を通じて/を通して」 | 一年を通じて/四季を通して | written, explanations; in speech, 「一年中」 |
| via a person or channel | noun + 「を通じて/を通して」 | 友人を通じて/ネットを通して | spoken and written |
| through an experience | noun + 「を通して」 | 仕事を通して | spoken and written |
The two are mostly interchangeable; 「を通じて」 is slightly more written. For “passing a message on through someone” or “through your own experience”, you hear 「を通して」 more often. Mind the readings: 「通じて」 is read with 「つう」, and 「通して」 with 「とお」.

Compare
「にわたって」 and 「を通じて」For time, 「にわたって」 focuses on how long or how large something is, and what follows is usually one ongoing event: 「三日間にわたって雨が降った」. 「を通じて」 focuses on it being like this all through that time, and what follows is usually a state or tendency: 「一年を通じて雨が多い」. 「一年にわたって雨が多い」 sounds unnatural.
Watch out
Common mistakesEveryday tools still take 「で」: 「はしで食べる」, 「スマホで調べる」. 「を通じて」 is about going through a person, a channel or an experience; don’t say 「はしを通して食べる」.
「〜から〜にかけて」: from around … to …
「AからBにかけて」 gives a rough start and end, with blurred edges: something happens somewhere in that stretch of time or place, or on and off across it. It is common in weather forecasts and for seasons, regions and parts of the body. With only the end point, 「〜にかけて」 means “in the time leading up to …”: 「年末にかけて忙しくなる」.
| How to attach it | Example | Style |
|---|---|---|
| time noun + 「から」 + time noun + 「にかけて」 | 今夜から明日の朝にかけて | spoken and written; common in weather forecasts |
| place noun + 「から」 + place noun + 「にかけて」 | 九州から四国にかけて | same as above |
| end point only: noun + 「にかけて」 | 週末にかけて | same as above |

Compare
「まで」, 「にわたって」 and 「にかけて」With 「から〜まで」 (N5 lesson 5), the start and end are clear: opening hours, class times and journeys take 「まで」: 「店は九時から八時までです」. 「から〜にかけて」 only gives a rough idea. Also, 「にかけて」 needs a start or end time or place before it, not a length of time: say 「三日間にわたって」, not 「三日間にかけて」.
Tip
「〜にかけては」 (“when it comes to …”, about someone’s skill) is a different pattern, covered in lesson 16: 「料理にかけては、だれにも負けない」.
「〜に限って」: of all times; only
「に限って」 has three uses.
- Just when …, of all times: 「〜時に限って」, 「〜日に限って」, followed by something annoying that goes wrong. Very common in speech.
- Only, limited to: a restriction, mostly in notices and adverts; in writing it is often 「に限り」: 「本日に限り」, 「会員に限り」.
- Surely not … of all people: 「〜に限って〜ない」 shows strong trust in someone; you feel they would never do such a thing.
| Use | How to attach it | Example | Style |
|---|---|---|---|
| of all times | 「〜時/〜日」 + 「に限って」 | 急いでいる時に限って | spoken |
| only | noun + 「に限り/に限って」 | 先着三十名に限り | notices, adverts |
| surely not … of all people | person + 「に限って」 + negative | あの人に限って | spoken |

Compare
「だけ」 and 「に限って」「だけ」 is just a neutral “only”. 「に限り」 is the formal “limited to” of notices. The “of all times” and “surely not … of all people” uses carry the speaker’s annoyance or trust; with 「だけ」 the meaning changes.
Tip
「〜に限る」 at the end of a sentence means something else: “… is best”, “nothing beats …”. 「暑い日は冷たいそばに限る」 (on a hot day, nothing beats cold soba).

Dialogue and short text: a weekend harbour festival, a road reopens
- アンナ
鈴木さん、来週末の港のお祭り、行く?
Suzuki, are you going to the harbour festival next weekend?
- 鈴木
行きたい。確か金曜から日曜まで、三日間にわたってやるんだよね。
I’d like to. I think it runs for three days, from Friday to Sunday, right?
- アンナ
うん。サイトによると、夕方から夜にかけて、屋台がたくさん出るんだって。
Yeah. The website says lots of food stalls will be out from the evening into the night.
- 鈴木
いいね。でも天気が心配だな。わたしが出かける日に限って、雨が降るんだよ。
Sounds good. But I’m worried about the weather. It always rains on the very days I go out.
- アンナ
大丈夫だよ。この辺は、一年を通じて晴れの日が多いらしいよ。
It’ll be fine. Apparently there are lots of sunny days around here, all year round.
- 鈴木
そうなんだ。そういえば、アンナさんはどうしてこのお祭りを知ったの?
Really? By the way, Anna, how did you hear about this festival?
- アンナ
留学生のサークルを通して知ったの。去年行った先輩が、すごくよかったって。
Through the international students’ club. A senior who went last year said it was really great.
- 鈴木
じゃあ、土曜の夕方、駅で待ち合わせしよう。
Then how about meeting at the station on Saturday evening?
To say the festival lasts three days, Suzuki uses the website’s wording, 「三日間にわたって」; in a chat, 「三日間ずっと」 also works. Anna gives the rough time the stalls are out with 「夕方から夜にかけて」. Suzuki complains with the “of all days” 「日に限って」. Anna describes the weather here all year round with 「一年を通じて」, and says how she heard about the festival with 「を通して」.

Last week’s heavy rain buried about three kilometres of a prefectural road in the mountains under mud and rocks, and the road had been closed. Repair work went on day and night, and this afternoon it reopened to traffic for the first time in a week.
ただし、当面は午前六時から午後八時までの通行となり、夜間は緊急車両に限って通ることができる。今夜から明日の朝にかけて再び強い雨が予想されており、市は不要な外出を控えるよう呼びかけている。

For the time being, however, the road will be open only from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.; at night, only emergency vehicles may use it. More heavy rain is expected from tonight into tomorrow morning, and the city is asking people not to go out unless they need to.
The report uses 「にわたって」 for how long the damaged stretch is, 「昼夜を通じて」 for repair work that never stopped, 「に限って」 for the only vehicles allowed, and 「から〜にかけて」 for the rough time of the rain. The opening hours are a fixed rule, so they take 「から〜まで」.
