「〜に伴って」: one thing brings another
「に伴って」 means when A happens or changes, B comes with it. A can be a gradual change (a growing population, rising temperatures) or a one-off event (a move, a refurbishment, a new line opening, a system update); this is the biggest difference from 「につれて」. It is mostly used in the news, notices and reports, and rarely in everyday chat.
| How to attach it | Example | Style |
|---|---|---|
| noun + 「に伴って」 | 移転に伴って | written, news, notices |
| verb dictionary form + 「に伴って」 | 気温が上がるに伴って | same as above |
| written linking form: 「に伴い」 | 改装に伴い、 | official documents, notices |
| before a noun: 「に伴う」 + noun | 高齢化に伴う課題 | written |
| linking to the previous sentence: 「それに伴って」 | それに伴って、 | written, formal spoken explanations |
駅の開業に伴って、周りに新しい店が増えた。
With the opening of the station, more new shops have appeared around it.
店舗の改装に伴い、今月末まで休業いたします。
Due to refurbishment, the shop will be closed until the end of this month.
気温が上がるに伴って、熱中症で運ばれる人が増えている。
As temperatures rise, more and more people are being taken to hospital with heatstroke.
高齢化に伴う課題について、住民どうしで話し合った。
The residents discussed among themselves the issues that come with an ageing population.
会社が郊外に移った。それに伴って、通勤に一時間以上かかるようになった。
My company moved to the suburbs. Because of that, it now takes me more than an hour to get to work.
Watch out
Common mistakes「に伴って」 links a change to another change it brings. It isn’t used for “together with a friend” (that is 「と一緒に」 or 「とともに」), and it isn’t used when asking a friend to do something: don’t say 「出張に伴って、お土産を買ってきてね」. In notices, 「〜に伴い、ご迷惑をおかけします」 and 「〜に伴い、ご注意ください」 are set wordings, and you can use them as they are.
Tip
The verb 「伴う」 itself means “to come with, to involve”: 「危険を伴う作業」 (work that involves danger), 「痛みを伴う」 (to come with pain).
「〜につれ(て)」 and 「〜とともに」: N3 review, one step further
In N3 lesson 4 you learnt that 「につれて」 means both sides change gradually, one change driving the other, and that 「とともに」 is a written “as …” that can also mean “together with …” and “at the same time as …”. At N2 you will also often read these two forms:
| Expression | How to attach it | Example | Style |
|---|---|---|---|
| 「につれ」 | verb dictionary form / noun + 「につれ」 | 日が暮れるにつれ、 | written linking form of 「につれて」 |
| 「であるとともに」 | noun + 「であるとともに」 | 医師であるとともに、 | written: is …, and at the same time … |
| 「とともに」 (together with …) | noun + 「とともに」 | 家族とともに | written, speeches |
日が暮れるにつれ、通りを歩く人も少なくなっていった。
As the sun went down, fewer and fewer people were walking in the streets.
夜が更けるとともに、雨はさらに強くなった。
As the night wore on, the rain grew even heavier.
彼女は医師であるとともに、二人の子どもを育てる母親でもある。
She is a doctor and, at the same time, a mother raising two children.
この十年、地域の皆様とともに歩んでまいりました。
For these ten years, we have walked alongside everyone in the community.
A common phrase in speeches. 「歩む」 is a written word for “walk” or “go through (the years)”.
Compare
「につれて」 and 「に伴って」「につれて」 needs gradual change on both sides: 「年をとるにつれて、白髪が増える」. A one-off event can’t take 「につれて」; use 「に伴って」. For “the phone number changed when the company moved”, say 「移転に伴って」, not 「移転につれて」. Also, what follows 「につれて」 is a change that happens by itself, not your own plans or requests. What follows 「に伴って」 can be an organisation’s arrangements (「路線を変更します」), but it isn’t used for everyday requests such as asking a friend to do something.
「〜次第で」 and 「〜次第だ」: depending on …
「次第」 after a noun means the result is decided by that noun: a different method gives a different result; the plan depends on the weather. Before it usually comes something people can influence (effort, method, ideas, the other person’s attitude), but it can also be something you have to wait and see, such as the weather or a result. It is common in both speech and writing.
| Form | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| noun + 「次第で」 + result | やり方次第で | depending on the method (the result will differ) |
| noun + 「次第だ/です」 | 天気次第です | it depends on the weather |
| noun + 「次第では」 + a possible result | 結果次第では | depending on the result (… may happen) |
| 「〜かどうかは」 + noun + 「次第だ」 | 行くかどうかは君次第だ | whether to go is up to you |
同じ材料でも、切り方次第で味がずいぶん変わる。
Even with the same ingredients, the taste changes a lot depending on how you cut them.
試合に勝てるかどうかは、最後の五分の粘り次第だ。
Whether we win the match depends on how well we hold on in the last five minutes.
明日の天気次第では、遠足は来週に延期になる。
Depending on tomorrow’s weather, the school outing may be postponed until next week.
古い家具も、工夫次第でおしゃれに生まれ変わる。
With a little ingenuity, even old furniture can be turned into something stylish.
どの店にするかは、君次第だよ。
Which place we go to is up to you.
Compare
「によって」 and 「次第で」「によって」 (N3 lesson 12) only says things differ: 「人によって好きな色が違う」. 「次第で」 says this factor decides the result, often with the feeling that it can be controlled: 「言い方次第で、相手の反応が変わる」. When you are only listing differences, 「人次第で好きな色が違う」 sounds unnatural.
| Form | Meaning | Example | Lesson |
|---|---|---|---|
| noun + 「次第だ/で」 | depends on | 努力次第だ | this lesson |
| masu stem + 「次第」 | as soon as … (formal) | わかり次第、連絡します | N3 lesson 3 |
| ta form + 「次第です」 | that is how it came about (explains the circumstances; you only need to understand it) | ご連絡した次第です | common in business emails |
| 「次第に」 | adverb: gradually | 次第に暗くなる | an adverb, not part of these patterns |
Watch out
Common mistakes「次第に」 is an adverb meaning “gradually”. It doesn’t mean “depending on”, and it doesn’t mean “as …”. For “as the rain got heavier, the river rose”, say 「雨が強くなるにつれて、川の水が増えた」, not 「雨が強くなる次第に」.

Compare
“As” and “with” for gradual change are 「につれて」; “along with” and “due to” for a change that something brings are 「に伴って」; “depend on” is 「次第だ」. English “depend on” can also simply mean “differ”; then Japanese uses 「によって」. “At the same time as being …” is 「であるとともに」.
Dialogue and short text: a shop refurbishment, bus route changes
- 中村
グエンさん、来月の改装に伴って、一週間お店を閉めることになったんだ。
Nguyen, we’re going to close the shop for a week for next month’s refurbishment.
- グエン
そうなんですか。その間、シフトはどうなりますか。
Oh, really? What will happen with the shifts during that time?
- 中村
工事の進み具合次第だけど、再開の前日には準備を手伝ってもらうかもしれない。
It depends on how the work goes, but I might ask you to help get things ready the day before we reopen.
- グエン
わかりました。改装したら、メニューも変わるんですか。
OK. Will the menu change too after the refurbishment?
- 中村
うん。席が増えるとともに、ランチのセットも二種類増やす予定だよ。お客さんの反応次第では、夜の営業を延ばすことも考えてる。
Yes. Along with adding more seats, we’re planning to add two more lunch sets. Depending on how customers react, I’m also thinking of staying open later in the evening.
- グエン
楽しみです。仕事に慣れるにつれて、任せてもらえることも増えてきたので、がんばります。
I’m looking forward to it. As I’ve got used to the work, I’ve been given more to handle, so I’ll do my best.
- 中村
頼りにしてるよ。
I’m counting on you.
The shop manager uses 「改装に伴って」 for the closure the refurbishment brings, 「次第だ」 for shifts that depend on how the work goes, and 「とともに」 for adding lunch sets at the same time as seats. 「反応次第では」 introduces one possible result. Nguyen getting used to the work and being given more to do are both gradual changes, so she uses 「につれて」.

Also, when the hospital opens, a direct bus from the station to the hospital will start running. Depending on how the buses are used, we may revise the timetable further in future.
The notice uses 「に伴い」 for the route changes that the hospital opening brings, 「とともに」 for the direct bus that starts at the same time, and 「次第では」 for possible changes later. All three are written expressions.
