左に単語、右に例文
カイさんは日本語の新しいノートを買って、一週間ずつ違う書き方を試してみることにしました。自分に合った書き方を見つけたかったのです。最初の週は、定規でページの真ん中に縦の線を引いて、左右に分けました。左には新しい単語、右にはその単語を使った例文です。例文を考えるのに時間がかかって、少し大変でした。

Kai bought a new notebook for Japanese and decided to try a different way of writing in it each week. He wanted to find the way that suited him. In the first week, he used a ruler to draw a line down the middle of the page, splitting it into left and right: new words on the left, and on the right an example sentence using each word. Thinking up the examples took time, and it was a bit hard work.
二週目は、真ん中に単語を一つ書いて、そこから線をのばし、関係のある言葉を書いていきました。「雨」から「梅雨」「ぬれる」「天気予報」へと広がっていくのは楽しかったのですが、あとで読むと、どこから見ればいいのか分かりませんでした。三週目は、短い言葉と矢印だけで書きました。授業中は速く書けましたが、週末に開くと、矢印の意味をもう忘れていました。

In the second week, he wrote one word in the middle of the page, drew lines out from it and added related words one by one. It was fun watching “rain” spread out to “the rainy season”, “get wet” and “weather forecast”, but when he read it later, he didn’t know where to start. In the third week, he wrote only short words and arrows. He could write fast in class, but when he opened the notebook at the weekend, he had already forgotten what the arrows meant.
電車の中で三週間分のノートを見直していたとき、カイさんは、一週目のページだけ手で左側をかくして読んでいることに気づきました。例文を読んで、かくれた単語を思い出す。この読み方が、いちばん覚えやすかったのです。

Looking back through three weeks of notes on the train, Kai noticed that only on the first week’s pages was he covering the left side with his hand as he read. Read the example, remember the hidden word: this was the way he found it easiest to remember.
その夜、カイさんはノートのいちばん後ろのページに「ぼくのルール」を三行書きました。「線を引いて左右に分ける」「関係のある言葉は下に少しだけ」「矢印には意味も書く」。それから新しいページを開いて、定規でまっすぐな線を一本引きました。

That night, on the very last page of the notebook, Kai wrote three lines headed “My rules”: “Draw a line and split the page into left and right”, “Just a few related words underneath” and “Write what the arrows mean, too”. Then he opened a fresh page and drew one straight line with his ruler.

One small thing to do
Tip
Draw a line down the middle of today’s page of notes. On the left, write a Japanese word you’ve just learnt; on the right, make a sentence with it about your own life. Then cover the left side with your hand, look at the sentence and try to recall the word.
