Three expressions
駅で 友達を 探しました。
I looked for my friend at the station.
「〜を 探します」: to look for …. The person or thing you are looking for takes 「を」. In the story, 「黄色い ものだけ 探します」 means “looks only for yellow things”.
机の 上に 本が 三冊 あります。
There are three books on the desk.
「〜に 〜が あります」: there is something somewhere. The place comes before 「に」 and the thing before 「が」. Use 「あります」 for things and 「います」 for people and animals. In the story, 「公園の 前に、黄色い 自転車が ありました」 means “in front of the park there was a yellow bike”.
りんごと みかんを ぜんぶで 八つ 買いました。
I bought eight apples and mandarins in all.
「ぜんぶで」: in all, altogether. It comes before a number. In the story, 「ぜんぶで 十二こです」 means “twelve in all”.
One small thing to do
Tip
On your way home today, pick a colour and find three things in that colour. You can take photos, or just count them in your head. If you’re not going out, look around your room.
