Three expressions
宿題を してから、テレビを 見ます。
I’ll watch TV after I’ve done my homework.
「〜てから」: “after …”, “… and then”. It follows the te form: one thing is finished, then the next begins. In the story, 「お茶を 少し 飲んでから、ふくろを 開けました」 means “she drank a little tea and then opened the bag”.
寝る まえに、歯を みがきます。
I brush my teeth before I go to bed.
「〜まえに」: “before …”. It follows the dictionary form of a verb; after a noun, add 「の」, as in 「ご飯の まえに」. In the story, 「食べる まえに、のりを おにぎりに まきました」 means “before eating, she wrapped the nori round an onigiri”.
夜に なって、外が くらく なりました。
Night came, and it got dark outside.
「〜く なりました」: “became …”, “got …”. Drop the 「い」 of an i-adjective and add 「く なります」 to describe a change; with na-adjectives and nouns, use 「に なります」. In the story, 「のりが やわらかく なりました」 means “the nori went soft”.
One small thing to do
Tip
Next time you make onigiri, pack the nori separately, wrap it on just before you eat, and listen for that 「パリッ」. Shop-bought onigiri work the same way: open the wrapper only when you are about to eat.
