The next Sunday, Noah helped her again. “Thank you.” “Oh, not at all.” “Oh my,” she said, and laughed. She gave Noah a mandarin. It was very sweet.
Three expressions
まどを あけましょうか。
Shall I open the window?
「〜ましょうか」: “Shall I …?”. Change the 「ます」 of the masu form to 「ましょうか」 to offer to do something for someone; 「〜ましょう」 means “let’s do it together”, which is different. In the story, 「一つ 持ちましょうか」 means “Shall I take one?”
いえいえ、わたしは なにも して いませんよ。
Oh, not at all. I didn’t do anything.
「いえいえ」: a reply when someone thanks or praises you, meaning “not at all”, “it’s nothing”. 「どういたしまして」 isn’t wrong, but in everyday life you hear 「いえいえ」 much more. In the story, Noah answers with 「いえいえ」 the second time.
きのう、母の 料理を 手伝いました。
Yesterday I helped my mother with the cooking.
「手伝う」: to help. Both the person you help and the task take 「を」: 「おばあさんを 手伝う」, 「料理を 手伝う」. In the story, 「おばあさんを 手伝いました」 means “he helped the old lady”.
One small thing to do
Tip
If someone says 「ありがとう」 to you today, try answering 「いえいえ」. If you get no chance, say it once to the mirror, lightly and briefly.
