Key sentences
公園は 広くて、とても 静かでした。
The park was large and very quiet.
The te form of an i-adjective, 「広くて」, joins two adjectives; the past of a na-adjective is 「静かでした」 (lessons 9, 10 and 20 of the N5 grammar course).
野菜は あまり 高くなかったです。
The vegetables weren’t very expensive.
The past negative of an i-adjective is 「〜くなかったです」; with 「あまり」 it means “not very …” (lesson 9 of the N5 grammar course).
りんごは 高かったですから、買いませんでした。
The apples were expensive, so I didn’t buy any.
「から」 gives the reason, and the result follows; 「〜ませんでした」 is the past negative of a verb (lessons 6 and 20 of the N5 grammar course).
Watch out
「よかったです」The past of 「いい」 is 「よかったです」, not “いかったです”. The 「天気が よかったです」 in the text uses this change.
Keeping a diary
Culture
Japanese diaries often begin with the date, the day of the week and the weather: 「十月十二日(土)晴れ」. Common weather words are 「晴れ」 (sunny), 「くもり」 (cloudy) and 「雨」 (rain). Primary school pupils are often asked to keep an 「絵日記」 (picture diary) over the summer holidays.
