How to form it

How it is used

An adverb: 'in advance, beforehand', doing something before an event. Usually written in kana and common in notices and instructions, as in 「あらかじめご了承ください」. In speech, 「前もって」 is also used.

Examples

  1. カレーを作ろうと思ったので、予め野菜を切っておいた。

    I was thinking of making curry, so I cut up the vegetables in advance.

  2. ご欠席の場合は、あらかじめご連絡ください。

    If you will be absent, please let us know in advance.

  3. 道に迷わないよう、あらかじめ地図で駅からの行き方を確かめておいた。

    So as not to get lost, I checked the way from the station on a map beforehand.
